SUBMERGED POND PLANTS

 Anacharis:     Vallisneria:    Hornwort:   Red Ludwigia:

Submerged water plants are a must have in any pond or water garden. They compete directly with the algae in your pond for nutrients, keeping your water garden clean and clear. The amount of plants you should use depends on the size of your pond. For example a 4' x 6' to 6' x 6' pond, would need 10 submerged plants planted on the ponds bottom. Sizes 8' x 8' to 8' x 11' should use 25 plants. 11' x 11' to 11' x 16' should use 50 plants. Ponds 16' x 16' would need up to 75 plants planted throughout the ponds bottom. Larger ponds will need 100 or more plants to have a positive effect on algae growth. If you need help choosing the right amount of submerged water plants please contact us.

          Anacharis

Anacharis have narrow deep green pointed leaves with long branches stems. Anacharis is the most common submerged plant. Used for both pond and aquarium use for good reason. These submerged water plants break down fish waste and left over nutrients in your pond, controlling algae growth. For the control of algae use one bunch for every foot of pond surface area. Small fishing weights can be used to sink these plants to the bottom without planting. Anacharis also make an ideal spot for breeding fish, as they provide a great place for little fish to hide from predators. Anacharis will grow in water 6" inches to 4' feet deep or in full sun to partial shade. Anacharis is a vary fast grower feeding primarily through its leaves. It is not necessary that it be planted since soil is not needed for their survival. It can root in the pond bottom or float freely. This hardy plant will survive very low temperatures.

Vallisneria

Vallisneria is a large, reed like submerged pond plant, that has pale green leaves that grow toward the surface like ribbons. Use this pond plant with weighted anchors or containers. Plant several bunches together in a pot with soil. They can also be planted in your ponds gravel. Vallisneria does best when grown in shade, but can also be planted in partial shade to sun in water 6"-24" deep.  This water plant is winter dormant in all climates. This is a great submerged plant for providing food and shelter for fish, and filtering the water to control free floating algae. Vallisneria is easily re-grown by removing and rooting the clustered plants which grow from the creeping root system. This plant can grow rather large and can form a dense cover for ponds making your pond water cooler.

Hornwort

Hornwort is a flowerless submerged pond plant with green bristly foliage and small branched stems. This submerged plant does not have to be planted; just place the foliage below the waters surface. This plant adds fresh oxygen in a pond or aquarium. Hornwort plants derive all their nutrients from your pond water and will compete with the algae by consuming the nutrients available in the pond. Hornwort also provides a good area for fish to spawn and hide. Although it is considered tropical, most of the time this plant will survive winter climates. This submerged plant is hardy from zones 5-10
